Learn about climate projections, adaptation techniques, and the role of climate science in shaping effective responses to future climate impacts. Whether you’re new to the field or looking to deepen your understanding, this series provides resources for adapting to a changing climate.
This training video series offers essential insights into understanding Australia’s changing climate and the science behind climate extremes. Covering a range of topics from the fundamentals of climate science to advanced adaptation strategies, the videos are designed to equip decision-makers and professionals with the knowledge needed to navigate the challenges posed by climate change.
Climate essentials
In this video we introduce some concepts about climate – how we characterize the climate, how and why we measure it, and what the main influences on Australia’s climate.
Climate projection science
In this video we explain the science behind “climate projections”; these describe the future climate we can expect as a consequence of human caused climate change, and a brief snapshot of how Australia’s future climate is expected to change. We also cover how climate models work, including the emission scenarios they use, and why we can rely on them.
Australia’s changing climate and extremes
In this video, we introduce how the climate in Australia has already changed and how it impacts us in our ecosystem and built environment. This includes recent changes in temperature, rainfall, sea level and bushfires, and explains how we know that our climate is changing based on the information provided in Video 1.
Climate adaptation introduction
In this video, we introduce the idea of climate change adaptation and explain different types of adaptation. We also introduce a typical four-step adaptation planning framework to help consider the idea of adaptation planning in the following 4 videos.
Climate adaptation step 1: Scoping
In this video, we look at the first step of a typical four-step adaptation planning framework. We talk through considerations of scale, engagement, planning outcomes and climate scenarios.
Climate adaptation step 2: Understanding vulnerability and risk
In this video, we look at the second step of a typical four-step adaptation planning framework. We talk through the concepts underlying an integrated vulnerability and risk assessment, as well as different levels of assessment.
Climate adaptation step 3: Adaptation options and plans
In this video, we look at the third step of a typical four-step adaptation planning framework. We look at the concept of adaptation responses or ‘options’ and consider how they might be assessed and sequenced.
Climate adaptation step 4: Implementation and monitoring
In this video, we look at the final step of a typical four-step adaptation planning framework. We consider the different outcomes of monitoring and evaluation to consider.
