Accessibility and interpretation of climate data can vary between sources. Numerous sources of climate change data in Australia vary in presentation, coverage,
scale, and time periods. This guide helps users select the appropriate information for their needs.

Climate models are becoming more advanced and can simulate an increasing range of climate processes. These improvements are the result of having more observational data to calibrate the models, a better understanding of atmospheric processes and interactions, more sophisticated analytical techniques, and accelerating computer capabilities.

From 2020 to 2022, eastern Australia had much more rain than usual. In these years, three La Niña events occurred in a row, only the third occurrence of a triple La Niña since the 1950s. Under climate change, most models project a decline in winter-spring rainfall in southeastern Australia, and the influence of ENSO on rainfall is likely to strengthen. This would suggest increased drying during El Niño years but extreme La Niña-related rainfall may increase.

We often hear that as the world warms, extreme weather events will increase in frequency and/or intensity. But it’s hard to say how extreme wind events will change. This doesn’t make it easy for decision-makers considering the risks of extreme wind, so our researchers are working hard to provide useful insights to help.

The data ACCESS provides can be used to predict climate and environmental changes, and to inform considerations of climate risk, mitigation pathways, carbon management, adaptation policy, and decision-making for Australia.

Will extreme rainfall events become more intense in the future? Climate scientists expect extreme rainfall events to become more intense as the world warms, increasing the risk to many Australian communities already affected by flash flooding. Our researcher are finding out more about the risks of extreme rainfall that we are likely to experience.

Knowledge of the practice of climate change adaptation is slowly shifting from a focus on barriers and limits to an understanding of its enablers. Here…
