Building climate literacy in decision-making is critical for Australia’s climate adaptation efforts. The NESP Climate Systems Hub’s Synthesis communication and data: Tailored information for stakeholders project worked with government stakeholders to develop and deliver a two-day training course on climate science, information, and adaptation planning.

Co-designed in 2022 and delivered throughout 2023 and 2024, the training was created by a team with over 35 years of combined experience in climate and adaptation training. Initially trialled as a one-day program in Perth, participant feedback led to an expanded two-day course, delivered to around 60 government participants across Perth and Canberra.

The course covered climate science fundamentals, accessing and interpreting climate information, adaptation planning approaches, and climate communication, with interactive breakout sessions and direct Q&A opportunities with climate scientists. Pre- and post-training surveys captured the impact of the program, with strong engagement and positive feedback highlighting its value in supporting informed decision-making in government.

The insights gathered from these pilots were used to refine the training program for future delivery, ensuring it continues to meet the practical needs of stakeholders and contributes to building Australia’s climate resilience.
