Over the past decade, the Tasmanian Government has invested heavily in building a resilient and thriving agriculture sector, working closely with industry to deliver practical tools that support informed decision-making. One of the most successful outcomes of this collaboration is the Enterprise Suitability Maps (ESM), developed by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. These geospatial tools combine digital soil mapping, climate data, and crop parameters to guide land use decisions across the state.
This case study, developed as part of the project Enabling Adaptation Best Practice, explores the impact of the ESM on Tasmania’s rapidly growing wine industry—one of the most frequent users of the tool. By tracing the development and use of the ESM, the report identifies the key enabling factors that support not just the creation of effective information products, but also the broader conditions that allow climate adaptation and transformation to occur on the ground.
