Drought is a regular part of Australia’s climate, driven by natural rainfall variability. However, as the climate changes, drought patterns are shifting, creating new challenges for managing land, water, and ecosystems. To help decision makers prepare for these challenges, researchers from the NESP Climate Systems Hub have developed regional drought projections tailored to Australia’s diverse landscapes.
Building on previous work from the NESP Stage 1 Earth Systems and Climate Change Hub, these new projections offer insights into future changes in rainfall and soil moisture — two critical indicators of drought. The Hub team worked closely with stakeholders to co-design and co-develop these projections, ensuring they meet the practical needs of those managing drought risks.
These tailored projections have already supported various organisations, including the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water, and the NESP Resilient Landscapes Hub. By providing accessible data and clear guidance, the projections help users understand historical drought impacts, assess future risks, and apply this knowledge in their decision-making processes.
