Ocean temperature extremes, both hot and cold, can have severe impacts on marine ecosystems and fisheries. This paper characterises marine cold spells (MCS) and marine heatwaves (MHW) using Sea Surface Temperature satellite observations, finding that there is a non-uniform shift in temperature extremes and SST variations, which can be largely explained by mean warming.
