Advancing ACCESS—Australia’s climate and earth system modelling capabilities to provide world-class data and insights for research, policy, and international climate negotiations.
Next-generation climate modelling for science and policy
Australia’s Climate and Earth System Model (ACCESS) is a critical research tool tailored to Australian conditions, supporting climate policy and decision-making. This project will prepare new versions of the ACCESS Earth System Model and use these to perform climate simulations for the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 7 (CMIP7)—a global initiative that informs international climate assessments, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 7th Assessment Report (AR7).
By developing an Australian-owned model, researchers can better capture local influences like the Southern Ocean’s role in future climate and carbon management and how Australia’s nutrient-limited soil impacts plant productivity and carbon uptake—factors often overlooked in international models. ACCESS ensures Australia has internationally credible tools for negotiations and policy decisions. The project, led by CSIRO in partnership with BoM, Monash University and the ACCESS-NRI, will provide researchers with cutting-edge climate data, supporting climate projections and the nation’s transition to net zero.
