Understanding extreme humid heat and climate change

January 24, 2025

As climate change accelerates, extreme humid heat events are becoming more frequent, posing a growing threat to human health and well-being. While dry heat extremes are expected to intensify across Australia, the dangers of humid heat—often more harmful to human health—are less understood.

Researchers at the Climate Systems Hub are working to understand these events and track trends better to improve our preparedness and adaptation strategies. With an increase in heat-related mortality rates, extreme heat events’ increasing frequency and intensity will have far-reaching impacts on healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure.
